Florida Lobster Mini Season 2026: A Local's Guide to Chasing Bugs

There are two types of people in South Florida at the end of July: the ones loading up the boat at 4 AM with tickle sticks and dive flags, and the ones who forgot mini season was this week.

Don't be the second one.

Florida's spiny lobster mini season — officially called the "sport season" — lands on Wednesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 30, 2026. That's two days of controlled chaos on the water, thousands of divers hitting the reefs, and the best shot at filling your cooler before the regular season opens August 6th.

Whether you're a seasoned bug hunter or suiting up for the first time, here's everything you need to know — plus what to wear so you don't look like a tourist while you're doing it.

📅 2026 Lobster Season Dates

Mini Season (Sport Season): July 29–30, 2026
The last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July. Starts at 12:01 AM on July 29, ends at midnight July 30.

Closed Period: July 31 – August 5
No harvest of any kind. Don't even think about it.

Regular Season: August 6, 2026 – March 31, 2027
Six per person per day, all the way through spring.

🦞 Bag Limits — Know Before You Go

This is where people get tripped up. The limits depend on where you're diving:

Possession limits off the water:

• July 29: Equal to your daily bag limit
• July 30: Double the daily bag limit (so you can keep both days' catch)

FWC does not play around with enforcement during mini season. Every year, officers are out in force checking bags, gauges, and licenses. Know your limits.

📏 Size Requirements — Measure in the Water

Every lobster must have a carapace longer than 3 inches. The carapace is measured from between the horns (excluding soft tissue) to the rear edge of the shell.

You must measure every lobster while it's still in the water. Not on the boat. Not at the dock. In the water. And you're required by law to have a measuring gauge on you at all times while diving. If you don't have one and FWC checks you, your lobster gets confiscated and you get fined.

Short lobsters go back. Egg-bearing females go back. No exceptions.

🤿 Gear Checklist — What to Bring

Essential Dive Gear:

• Mask, snorkel, and fins — you don't need scuba certification, most lobstering is done free-diving in shallow water
• Tickle stick and bully net (the classic method)
• Lobster snare (the one-tool alternative)
• Puncture-resistant dive gloves — spiny lobsters earned that name
• Mesh catch bag
• Lobster measuring gauge (required by law)
• Diver-down flag (required by law — display it whenever you're in the water)

🚫 Where You Can't Dive

Mini season has some no-go zones. FWC will be patrolling them:

• John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (closed during mini season only)
• Everglades National Park (year-round — no harvest)
• Dry Tortugas National Park (year-round)
• Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary no-take zones
• Biscayne Bay / Card Sound Lobster Sanctuary
• Five Coral Reef Protection Areas in Biscayne National Park

If you're diving in the Keys, know your zones before you splash. The fines are steep and the officers don't give warnings during sport season.

🌙 Night Diving Rules

Night diving is prohibited in Monroe County during mini season. FWC defines diving as swimming at or below the water's surface — so this covers snorkeling too, not just scuba. This restriction only applies during the July 29–30 sport season in Monroe County waters. During regular season (August 6+), night diving is fair game everywhere.

🎯 Tips From a Local

1. Get there early. The good spots get crowded fast during mini season. Be on the water before sunrise.
2. Work the ledges. Lobsters hide under ledges, coral heads, and in crevices. Look for antennae waving before you dive down.
3. Use the tickle stick first. Gently guide the lobster out of its hole with the tickle stick, then scoop with the net. Rushing just sends them deeper.
4. Bring a backup gauge. They're cheap and easy to lose underwater. Have two.
5. Stay hydrated. You're exerting way more energy than you think. Bring twice as much water as you think you need and keep a True Local tumbler filled on the boat.

Can't make mini season? The regular lobster season opens August 6, 2026 and runs all the way through March 31, 2027. The daily bag limit drops to 6 per person statewide, but the crowds thin out significantly. Some of the best lobstering happens in September and October when the water is still warm, visibility is good, and the weekend warriors have moved on.
