Florida Man Weekly Roundup: Pool Noodle vs. 350-Pound Alligator — August 28, 2026

Welcome back to Florida Man Weekly, the only roundup where a pool noodle counts as a self-defense weapon, a riding lawn mower counts as a getaway vehicle, and a lily pad can bench more than you can. This week the Sunshine State delivered a traffic stop at 4 mph, a man who lost a swordfight to a 350-pound reptile, a guy who got outsmarted by a 3D-printed decoy, and—because Florida contains multitudes—two genuinely wholesome record-setters.

Buckle up, buttercup. Here's the week of August 22–28, 2026.

🚜 Pulled Over Doing 4 MPH on a Riding Lawn Mower (Old Town)

A deputy with the Dixie County Sheriff's Office Narcotic Interdiction Unit was cruising NE 799th Street in Old Town on August 19 when he spotted something that does not, technically, meet the safety requirements to operate as a registered vehicle on a Florida roadway: a man southbound on a red riding lawn mower.

So he pulled him over. Which is when things got worse for Roy Lee McDaniel, who deputies say smelled strongly of marijuana and helpfully volunteered that everything on the mower—including the gray bag between his feet—belonged to him. Inside the bag: marijuana, Clonazepam pills, a hypodermic needle, and a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Sir. The bag was between your feet. On a lawn mower. In the middle of the road. There was never a version of this where the bag stayed closed. He was booked into the Dixie County Jail on three drug charges.

🐊 Man Brings Pool Noodle to Alligator Fight (Palmetto)

Allan Hofmann of Palmetto is a responsible Floridian. Every morning he checks under his truck and his golf cart before walking his dog, because this is Florida and that is simply due diligence. But one recent morning he came back from the walk to find an 8-foot-3, roughly 350-pound alligator parked in his carport like it had an appointment.

Hofmann's plan? Climb on top of the golf cart and tap the gator on the head with a bright pink pool noodle.

“I thought maybe, yeah, it just needs to mosey on,” he said. “And all I did was make it angry.”

Foam noodle: 0. Apex predator: 1. He wisely called police, and licensed trappers hauled the gator off—leaving drag marks across his driveway that he says he's already got the power washer ready for. The gator was released into a waterway far, far from the carport. Everyone survived, including the noodle's dignity, barely.

✂️ Outsmarted by a 3D-Printed Fake Camera (Oviedo)

Somebody in Oviedo had been stealing Flock license plate cameras off the Lockwood Boulevard corridor between late July and early August. So police did the pettiest, most beautiful thing imaginable: at 10 p.m. on August 19 they installed 3D-printed decoy cameras—fake units that look real, collect zero data, and cost almost nothing.

At 12:57 a.m. the next morning, police say 24-year-old Evan Meyer showed up with a pair of pruning shears, snipped the decoy down, and smashed it while a sergeant sat nearby watching the whole performance. He was arrested Friday night and faces charges including criminal mischief and grand theft.

Replacing a real Flock camera runs about $800 plus installation. The bait camera cost the city, per the arrest report, nothing. Somewhere an Oviedo cop is still laughing.

🪷 Florida's Lily Pad Can Deadlift More Than You (Lake Wales)

Over at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, the horticulture team spent the week stacking gym weights onto a single Victoria waterlily leaf until it held 285.7 pounds—while a staffer knelt on a plank on top of it to prove the point. The leaf spans about 67 inches and was grown from a pea-sized seed in roughly four months.

That obliterates the garden's own previous record of 183 pounds, set last year with sandbags, coral stones, and—perfectly—bags of Florida oranges. Nursery manager Debbie Franco credits Florida sunshine, humidity, and deep pond water. The entry is in for the 4th Annual Waterlily Weigh-Off against 70+ gardens worldwide, with winners announced Friday. The prize is an actual championship belt, which is the correct prize.

🌊 1,200 Miles to Maryland on 1995 WaveRunners (Fernandina Beach)

Childhood friends Timothy Homan and Jake Thiel strapped extra gas cans to a pair of 1995 Yamaha WaveRunners and launched from the Fernandina Beach marina on Saturday, aiming to ride roughly 1,200 miles up the Intracoastal Waterway to Fenwick, Maryland—an eight-day haul through Georgia and the Carolinas.

Homan is an air traffic controller from Yulee; Thiel is an architect now living in Germany. Their ride, “Riding With a Purpose,” is raising money for Active Minds, a teen mental health organization. Thiel cheerfully described the trip as “a learning experience,” which is what you say when you commit to a week on a 31-year-old jet ski.

Doing something completely unhinged for a genuinely good reason may be the most Florida thing on this entire list.

🏆 Florida Man of the Week

The pool noodle guy. Not because it worked—it absolutely did not—but because when a 350-pound dinosaur showed up in his carport, his first instinct was to grab the nearest piece of pool furniture and try to reason with it. That's not stupidity. That's confidence.
