Florida Man Weekly Roundup: Gator vs. Bear, a Bomb “Joke” at MIA, and One Illegal Inch of Bass — September 4, 2026
Share
Happy Friday, Florida. The first week of September delivered exactly what we've come to expect from this state: a comedy routine that ended in handcuffs, an apex-predator drag race, a golf cart incident, a fisherman undone by a single inch, and one genuinely good man with a truck full of puppies. Let's get into it.
🛫 "No Lithium Batteries… But I Have a Bomb"
Rule number one of Miami International Airport: the gate agent is not your open-mic audience. A 33-year-old man was boarding an American Airlines flight to Camagüey, Cuba on Monday morning when the agent ran the standard security questions — did he have any lithium batteries or incendiary devices in his bag?
His answer, per the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office arrest report: "No, but I have a bomb."
The agent immediately told him he would not be flying and that a supervisor was on the way. He clarified that he was joking. Nobody laughed. Deputies swept his luggage with a K-9 (zero bombs, one full confession) and booked him into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a false bomb report charge, with a $2,500 bond. Best detail: deputies said it happened one day after another passenger told an American agent he had a grenade. Two aspiring comedians, one weekend, same airport.

🐻 Gator vs. Bear: The Kissimmee River Swim-Off
Name one other place on Earth where you can be out bluegill fishing and accidentally film a wildlife documentary. Captain Justin Morgan was on the Kissimmee River near Lake Okeechobee when he spotted what he thought was a wild hog swimming across. It was a black bear. And it was not swimming for fun — an alligator was cruising along right behind it.
The bear won, reaching the far bank with a comfortable-ish margin. Which is lucky, because gators can swim around 20 mph and bears cannot. Florida has roughly a million-plus alligators and a few thousand black bears, and this week two of them briefly shared a lane.

🎣 Cited For a Fish That Was One Inch Too Good
A Florida angler who posts as MrGoneFishin filmed an FWC officer measuring three bass laid out in his truck bed: 16.5 inches, 17.5 inches, and 17 inches. The officer's verdict — "two of these you can have."
Here's the trap. Florida freshwater rules let you keep up to five black bass a day, but only one of them may be longer than 16 inches. He had three over the line, and by his own account got cited for a misdemeanor because a fish was an inch over. Somewhere in Florida there is a bass that is legally a menace to society.

⛳ Two Glasses of Wine and a Golf Cart in The Villages
Over in Sumter County, a 70-year-old resident of The Villages crashed her golf cart on the path near Buena Vista Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Deputies noted the classic tells and, in a detail we respect for its confidence, she insisted her headlights had been on — the deputy then found the lights switched off. She also gave a direction of travel that was the opposite of where she'd actually come from.
She admitted to two glasses of wine with dinner, needed sutures for a leg cut, and was arrested at the hospital on a misdemeanor DUI charge before posting a $500 bond. Nobody else was hurt. The Villages remains undefeated as America's most eventful retirement community.

🐶 The Wholesome One: Eight Puppies, One Gas Station, One Good Florida Man
Cape Coral's Brendon Leslie was driving to Mississippi when he made a last-minute stop at a gas station in northern Alabama and found eight puppies — all under two months old — hanging around a dumpster. "I thought that was crazy," he said.
He loaded them up, got them checked out and vaccinated by a vet in Tupelo, and drove the entire litter home to Southwest Florida, documenting the trip along the way. Seven of the eight have already found homes. The last one, named Elvis, is staying — he's officially part of Leslie's dog pack now. Florida Man contains multitudes.
