Florida Man Weekly Roundup: Deputy vs. Frog, a Gator With a Turkey Entourage, and Robot Rabbits β€” September 18, 2026

Happy Friday, Florida. Another week in the Sunshine State has come and gone, and once again nobody had to make anything up. This week we've got a deputy going hand-to-hand with an amphibian, a gator with a turkey security detail, robot rabbits deployed against pythons, a crab that came armed, a guy whose excuse got worse the second time he told it, and a whole fishing village saving a dolphin. Let's roll. 🐊🌴

🐸 "It's a Frog!" β€” Deputy Wrangles Tiny Suspect During Traffic Stop

In Seffner, a Hillsborough County deputy walked up to a routine traffic stop and immediately got a call for backup he was not trained for: a tiny green tree frog had hopped into the driver's car. The driver β€” extremely not a frog person β€” screamed "Oh my God! It's a frog! Did it jump on me?" and got out of that vehicle faster than any field sobriety test has ever been completed.

The deputy, laughing, went in after it. The frog worked the passenger seat, then made a break for the backseat to evade capture. After a few attempts (and, per HCSO, "a whole lot of laughs") the suspect was safely removed and released. The sheriff's office says the frog "is currently on a strict 'stay off the road' policy." Body cam footage of a grown man chasing a frog around a Toyota is exactly the public service we pay for.

πŸ¦ƒ Alligator Rolls Onto Golf Course With a Turkey Entourage

Golfers at St. Johns Golf Club expected sand traps, water hazards, maybe a gator. What they got was a large alligator strolling across the fairway being followed β€” closely, confidently β€” by an entire flock of wild turkeys. The video went viral this week and honestly it looks less like wildlife and more like a gator arriving at the club with his crew.

For context: Florida has roughly 1.3 million alligators and they live in all 67 counties, so the gator part isn't the news. The turkey escort is the news. FWC still runs a nuisance gator hotline (1-866-FWC-GATOR) if one of these entourages shows up in your yard.

πŸ‡ Florida Deploys Robot Rabbits Against the Pythons

This is the most Florida sentence of the week: University of Florida researchers have about 90 fake robotic rabbits scattered across the Everglades to lure Burmese pythons out of hiding. The decoys can be programmed to emit heat, scent, movement and ground vibrations β€” basically a full sensory catfish operation for snakes.

UF professor Robert McCleery says finding the pythons has always been the hard part, not catching them, so the robo-bunnies bring the snake to a known spot instead. Next up: tech that pings nearby trappers the moment a python approaches a decoy. Funded by the South Florida Water Management District, built with partner REWYLD. Animatronic bait bunnies versus 18-foot invasive snakes β€” we love this state.

πŸ¦€ Crab Shows Up to a Backyard Armed With a Blade

Eduardo Alvarez posted a video this week captioned "Florida is getting out of hand," and for once that was an understatement. His dog Summer went to sniff a crab in the yard, and the crab β€” holding an actual blade in its oversized claw β€” swiped at her. Summer wisely backed off. Alvarez then tried to pick it up and got swung at himself before carefully relocating the crustacean to the back of the property.

The clip racked up hundreds of thousands of likes, with the internet's best comment being: "We got crabs wielding weapons before GTA 6." Everybody walked away fine, including the crab and its sidearm.

🚨 "I Was Looking for a Well-Lit Place to Stop" (In a Lit Parking Lot)

Just before midnight on a Friday in Palm Coast, a Flagler County deputy tried to pull over 42-year-old Floyd Gaines Jr. for a traffic infraction. Lights on, siren on β€” and Gaines kept going, swerving through streets and several well-illuminated parking lots before finally stopping at the Palm Coast Professional Complex, where deputies did a high-risk stop and arrested him without incident.

His explanation? He was looking for a well-lit place to pull over. Then, moments later, a second explanation: he never saw the deputy behind him. Pick one, sir. Sheriff Rick Staly's verdict: "Fleeing from deputies is a stupid decision, because you're not going to get away." A warning became a third-degree felony and a trip to what Staly calls the Green Roof Inn.

🐬 Birthday Boat Ride Turns Into a Six-Hour Dolphin Rescue

Our wholesome finish: retired Cape Coral firefighter John Lynch was out on his boat for his birthday when a fisherman waved him down β€” a dolphin had stranded on a sandbar in Matlacha Pass, just north of the Yucatan Waterfront Tiki Bar. "I've done a lot of stuff in my life, but that was not on my bingo card," Lynch said.

He and the fisherman couldn't budge it alone, so Lynch put out a call on Facebook. Commercial fishermen, charter captains and neighbors showed up. For almost six hours the group shaded the dolphin and poured water over it to keep it alive until FWC biologists arrived, tagged it and set it free around 5:30 p.m. "It would have been more surprising if people hadn't shown up," Lynch said. "This is a tight community." That's the Florida nobody puts in the memes.
